- W3144431273 abstract "The textile industry is one of the biggest growing global industrial sectors. Along with this comes high consumption of chemicals, energy and water, which generate significant environmental impacts. In this context, recycling of textile materials becomes more and more necessary. Recycling is the process in which a product or its components are used to create something new, diminishing the need for new exploitation of natural resources and minimizing the amount of waste. Four categories of recycling technologies exist and include primary (recycling material in its original form for recovery of equal value), secondary (mechanical recycling), tertiary (chemical recycling) and quaternary approaches (waste-to-energy conversion processes). Barriers to implement and establish recycling have been largely associated with economic viability, quality and performance requirements. This chapter goal is to increase the understanding of available technologies, current barriers, alternative strategies, innovative technologies and economic aspects in the field of textile recycling." @default.
