- W3145606383 abstract "This study gives voice to three ways of becoming modern in Turkish experience through a reading of novels of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar, Oguz Atay, and Orhan Pamuk.1 The first possibility, represented by works of Tanpinar, more conservative and defensive, concerned with preserving what considered authentic culture. Antiindividualistic, it nonetheless attempts to appropriate culture and change generated by its impact within the traditional essence. The second possibility, represented by works of Atay, open ended: it reaches beyond limitations of Turkish social-historical domain to create a new individual (and implicitly social) existence while remaining critical of The last possibility, represented by works of Pamuk, expresses dominant concept of in Turkey, which equates modernization with Westernization. Individualization comes to mean replication of Western individuality. The novel in Turkey was born in process and adopted as its main problematic. The first explorations of novelistic prose took place at end of 19th and beginning of 20th centuries before final breakup of Ottoman Empire. Eminent critic Berna Moran points out that for first novelists, like §emsettin Sami, Namik Kemal, and Ahmet Mithat, European literature, particularly novel, was the sign of a superior civilization; they regarded prevalent OttomanTurkish storytelling literature as backward. For these writers, transition story to novel was emblematic of a change day-dreaming to rationalism, childhood to maturity, in sum, from primitive to civilized life.2 These early novels criticized pretentious and superficial imitations of West through a pathetic (alafranga) character while presenting correct Westernization through a countercharacter.3 Ahmet Mithat's Felatun Bey ve Rakim Efendi animates these two figures; for instance, Felatun Bey represents the alafranga snob gets carried away by consumption economy and Rakim Efendi an Ottoman gentleman is Westernized to a convenient extent and who understands correctly. He hardworking, competent, thrifty, and has Western enjoyments.4" @default.
