- W3146075998 abstract "Neutrons have been detected in co inc i ~ w i t h the two outgoing fragments in deep i ne las t i c reactions of 63Cu on 197Au at 365 MeV. Most of these neutrons are evapored from the f u l l y accelerated fragments. An addit ionnal low energy contr ibut ion appears. Int roduct ion. In deep i ne las t i c co l l i s i ons , a large part of the i n i t i a l r e la t i ve motion is t ransferred to other degrees of freedom (deformation and internal exc i ta t ion energy) and f i n a l l y leads to the emission of part icules and y rays. We have measured the neutron emission accompanying co l l i s ions between 365 MeV 63Cu ions, accelerated by ALICE at Orsay, and 197Au nuclei . This system was chosen because information is avai lable on the angular, k ine t ic energy and mass d is t r ibu t ions ( i ) and on the u ray m u l t i p l i c i t y (2). The study of a s im i l a r system indicates that the average m u l t i p l i c i t y of charged pa r t i cules is low (3). The bombarding energy is i . I times the Coulomb bar r ie r and the contr ibut ion of negative scat ter ing angles is neg l ig ib le ( i ) . Experiment. The energies of the two coincident deep i ne las t i c products emitted at +63 ~ ( l i g h t fragment) and -45 ~ (heavy fragment) to the beam d i rec t ion were measured with 2 surface bar r ie r detectors. The neutrons were detected in ~ p last i c s c i n t i l l a t o r s : 2 in the di rect ions of the fragments (because the neutrons evapored by a fragment are focused in i t s f l i g h t d i rec t i on ) , I at a backward angle (-135 ~ ) and 1 out of the reaction plane (azimuthal angle : 65 ~ , 72 ~ to the beam). A number of precautions were taken : the ca l ib ra t ion of the detectors was made cont i nuously during the experiment with a 252Cf source ; the reaction chamber was imm thick to minimize the neutron and y ray scat ter ing ; the random coincidence rate was kept low and substracted. Results. Most of the neutrons are emitted by the ~ c c e l e r a t e d fragments. Indeed, the neutron detectors have a maximum counting rate N in the direct ions of the fragments, and, in these di rect ions, the average neutron energies E n (corresponding ve loc i t ies Vn) are c lea r l y correlated with the mean ve loc i t i es Vf of the fragments detected in the same direct ions (see tab le) . d i rect ion N n n f ( / s t ) (MeV) (cm/ns) (cm/ns) l i gh t fg t (+63 ~ ) 1.1 6. 3.4 2.1 heavy fg t (-45 ~ ) 0.8 3.5 2.6 1. backward (-135 ~ ) 0 . i I . 1.4 out of plane(+72 ~ 0.55 2.5 2.2 In order to get the center of mass energy spectra of the neutrons emitted by the fragments, a kinematical i t e r a t i v e analysis of the ve loc i t ies of the fragments and detected neutrons has been made for each event by assuming only that the neutrons were emitted by one of the f u l l y accelerated fragments. I t must be noted that no assumption was made on the shape of the neutron c.m. spectra. The resul ts were summed in three bins : p a r t i a l l y damped events (PD), quas i f iss ion or relaxed (QFI) with low mass t ransfer (60<M<80), quas i f i ss ion events (QF2) with large mass t rans fer (80<M<110). The precision of the resul ts is l im i ted by : i ) re la t i v e l y poor s t a t i s t i c , i i ) the precision on the fragment ve loc i t ies to which the m u l t i p l i c i t i e s are very sensi t ive. However we have estimated the corresponding uncertaint ies to about 20%. The simple aspect of the resul ts l i es f i r s t in the shape of the neutron energy d i s t r i butions which exh ib i t the charac ter is t i c features of evaporation spectra with a median energy in agreement with the average temperature corresponding to the numbers of evaporated neutrons. In the fo l lowing tab le , the obtained values for the average number of neutrons emitted by the l i gh t fragment are cal led UL ; by the heavy fragment, ~N ; VT = ~L+~H ; AEK is the average kinet i c energy Ioss, Q the mass balance, Exy the exc i ta t ion energy carr ied away by gamma rays ; Exn is the exc i ta t ion energy carr ied away by the ~T neutrons." @default.
