- W3146489774 abstract "Like other children’s products, toy guns, non-powder firearms, and youth firearms such as rimfire and .22 models have become increasingly commodified since the 1940s. This chapter explores the trends in praise and condemnation, from the post-World War II era, when toy guns supposedly taught masculine values, through subsequent declining public support, concern over gun violence, and increased governmental regulation, to a firearm “renaissance” in the early 2010s, which inspired deregulation and renewed cultural and commercial interest in firearms, including youth products. Current commodification strategies include increased commercial availability and deregulation of replica non-powder firearms, promoting realistic qualities in toy guns and fanciful or colorful patterns for working youth firearms, and constructing youth rifles as products that strengthen social relations, build character, promote adventure, convey heritage, and teach responsibility. A textual analysis of 2019 marketing materials depicts youth firearms as sources of rationality, knowledge, and fun. As toy guns and youth firearms become increasingly morally controversial leisure products, industry has attempted to downplay threats, decouple products from the horrors of school shootings, and construct these items as social “goods.”" @default.
