- W3146812851 abstract "The evolution of the climate and vegetation of Australia was greatly driven by the consequences of plate tectonic movements throughout the Tertiary. Extensive regions of wet forests characterized the Early Tertiary in Australia. These showed an evolution of increasing diversity through to the Eocene. This was undoubtedly due to the northward movement of the Australian region from high southern to a mid latitude position. The Eocene to Pliocene was generally wetter than today but increasing seasonality in rainfall led to the development of scleromorphy and xerophytism from about the Miocene onwards. The upper Pliocene, however, seems to have more in conunon with Quaternary cycles of aridity which are associated with glacial conditions,at least as we recognise them in Late Quaternary records from southern Australia. This history parallels the patterns of eastern Asia where the movement of the Indian-Australian plate contributed signiflcanily to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, and caused major climate change in that region and globally. In the Late Teniary and Quatemary the climate systems of China and Australia have become increasingly linked due to the monsoon and trade wind circulation patterns across the equatorial region." @default.
