- W3146878225 abstract "While there is increasing evidence that digital threats are growing, especially with the rise of malicious actors, individuals and firms alike often do not undertake even basic precautionary measures. Using data on over 61,000 individuals from a sample of 54 countries, we investigate perceptions of digital risks. First, we find that individuals who use social media are significantly more likely to worry about online bullying, misinformation, and fraud by 67%, 72%, and 39%. Worries about online bullying and misinformation are greater for full-time and part-time workers and younger individuals, but we observe no differences for worries about fraud. Second, we find no statistically or economically significant association between actual cybersecurity vulnerabilities and any type of digital risk among users and non-users of social media. These results suggest that the average individual is inattentive to the source of many digital risks, which helps reconcile why many organizations and countries underinvest in cybersecurity investments." @default.
