- W314692425 abstract "WALLER, Bruce N. Against Moral Responsibility. Cambridge, Mass.: The M.I.T. Press, 2011. xi + 352pp. Cloth, $40.00--This book attacks the entire system of responsibility from within a naturalistic framework. If we take naturalism seriously, argues Waller, then there is no room for the notion of responsibility, which is a remnant of a system that believed we had mysterious and powers of willing. Such god-like powers, however, are not reconcilable with a naturalistic understanding of the world; their implications, therefore, should be thrown out with them. In short, Waller's goal is kill it [moral responsibility] and drive a stake through its heart. Surprisingly, perhaps, he argues that the abandonment of responsibility will actually benefit us as humans, especially those marginalized by society, and allow us to live better and more lives. To start, Waller briefly examines different prima facie arguments for responsibility and proposes that the varying accounts of responsibility are intended to justify belief in responsibility, rather than argue for it independently. If we examine our deep-seated belief in responsibility, however, then we would come to understand that it is rooted in evolved strike-back impulse. This should give us cause to examine whether independent argument, as opposed to a justification, for responsibility actually exists. The only argument, however, argues Waller, would require a robust libertarian free will, which is incompatible with naturalism. The reason that compatibilist accounts of free will won't suffice for responsibility is because the freedom of the individual is determined by his resources; and as every individual has different resources (genes, upbringing, and so forth), which he did not choose, every individual has a fundamentally unfair advantage/disadvantage. Waller then examines the relationship between free will and responsibility. The type of choice and control needed for responsibility is increasingly being explained away by the sciences. This has led to accounts that argue for moral responsibility in the gaps. Yet, these accounts all fall short of demonstrating genuine responsibility and it is likely that ultimately these gaps will be explained away as well. In addition, these accounts reduce our understanding of free will to whatever allows for responsibility. Without divorcing free will from responsibility, we are left with an anemic account of responsibility joined to a shallow account of free will. Waller then makes a helpful distinction between responsibility, where one owns up to his actions and 'moral' responsibility, noting that although take-charge responsibility proves psychologically beneficial, whether you are morally responsible is a different matter. …" @default.
