- W3147130101 abstract "Zinc (Zn) is one of the most essential mineral elements for all living organisms. Zn deficiency in humans is one of the major causes of hidden hunger, affecting more than 2 billion people in the world. Increasing Zn concentration in edible parts of many crops is important for improving human Zn nutrition. However, rice, which is often eaten in the developing countries in Asia, has lower grain Zn concentration than other cereals. Therefore, it is necessary and important to breed rice cultivars with increased grain Zn levels. We review studies on Zn biofortification in rice. In our recent study, we have focused on the use of wild relatives of rice as a resource to increase grain Zn concentration. We found that the Australian wild rice, Oryza meridionalis, has a higher grain Zn concentration than cultivated rice, O. sativa. Genetic analysis identified the responsible genomic regions, and one of the regions was further explored. In this chapter, we discuss the utility of these alleles for enhancing grain Zn concentration, and also discuss about the trade-off between yield and grain Zn concentration." @default.
