- W3147372373 abstract "Minority religious movements such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormons), or Seventh-day Adventists have adherents in many countries. They are commonly viewed as part of New Religious Movements (NRM’s). In this paper I will examine how Sub-Saharan African women migrating to Europe find in NRMs a spatial and human environment that could facilitate their sociocultural integration. It is part of a broader qualitative study of Mormon gender roles. I focus on the case of mostly Sub-Saharan African women in Mormon wards (parishes) in Belgium. The ratio of members of African origin in Mormon wards in West-Europe has been steadily increasing. Most of them are migrants open to missionary work and are converted in the host country. It leads to the development of multiracial congregations. For these women a peculiar acculturation sets in with intersectional dimensions of religion, gender, ethnicity, social level, and immigration status. As Mormons they are religiously marginal for the host society but they share this peripheral position with the local European church members. If they come from a country or region with a strong religious identity, their conversion to Mormonism may ostracize them within their ethnic group. On the other hand, their integration in the Mormon ward provides strong integrative opportunities, in particular for women. Indeed, a Mormon ward is a dynamic entity where nearly all women receive “callings” to serve as leaders or teachers in auxiliary organizations, since there is no professional clergy. These African women will closely collaborate with local women, join in service activities in the wider community, develop emotional bonds, and be able to expand their social circle beyond the limits other migrants encounter. As such an NRM can function as an effective intermediate step towards their broader integration. At the same time local women will have to adapt to the changing congregational identity." @default.
