- W3147740722 abstract "Nosocomial infections or ‘Healthcare-Associated Infections’ (HAI) are an ever-growing concern and cause a high risk of transmission of pathogens to both patients and healthcare workers. Pathogenic microbes can easily attach to the surfaces and contaminate the environment. Especially, textile materials owing to their rough surface morphology and being in direct and constant contact with patients, serve as a potential reservoir of microbes. Therefore this dangerous condition requires applying the most efficient strategies against bacterial colonization on contaminated surfaces and the spread of infections. To this aim, various approaches have been exploited to prepare textile materials with antibacterial properties among which the introduction of photo-induced antimicrobial agents (PIAAs) in textile materials can be considered as one of the most promising candidates. This method simply involves the use of photoactive compounds including both inorganic photocatalysts and organic photosensitisers, which can produce some reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation. PIAAs bring about numerous advantages, such as extraordinarily high antibacterial efficiency, broad-spectrum bacteria inactivation ability, fully controlled procedure by light irradiation, localized antibacterial function, user and environmentally friendly and cost-effective. In this chapter, a brief introduction to PIAAs along with the mechanism, application, challenges and the recent advances in antibacterial textile materials will be discussed." @default.
