- W3147757560 abstract "Nest defence behaviour o f four corvid species towards a c o m m o n foe, the carr ion crow, was examined. The various species responded quite differently when a caged crow was presented near the nest. C ompared with the other species magpies a t tacked the caged crow mos t often. Rooks were very vociferous and circled much above the crow. Jackdaws usually perched nearby ; occasionally, they circled over and scolded at the crow. Crows flew of f and frequent ly started to forage at a distance, behaving as though nothing alarming was happening near their nest. These differences in nest defence behaviour have been related to interas well as intraspecific variat ions in nesting conditions, including accessibility, camouflage, site, dispersion and const ruct ion o f nests. Behavioural responses and nesting condit ions are finely tuned and can be considered as elements o f adaptive complexes p romot ing the safety o f the nest. breeding pairs o f all four species. A crow was used because crows dominate the other species and are a c o m m o n threa t to nests o f all four species (e.g. Bossema et al. 1976). The nesting condit ions are as follows. Car r ion crows are soli tary nesters and build open nests, usually in or jus t below the canopy layer o f tall trees. Their nests are bet ter camouf laged than those of the other species. Ro o k s breed in compac t and conspicuous colonies, most of ten in more or less isolated groups o f very tall deciduous trees with open nests in the topmos t branches. Jackdaws are hole-nesters, using a large variety o f holes tha t they do no t excavate themselves. C o m m o n nest sites are woodpecker holes, hol low trees, holes in cliffs, rabbi t holes, nestboxes, chimneys, churchtowers and ruined buildings. Depending on the dispersion o f suitable holes, jackdaws m ay breed more or less solitarily or in loose colonies. Magpies nest solitarily. They usually build large, conspicuous, domed nests in the top o f trees." @default.
