- W31482403 abstract "Complex forming substances only form precipitates when combined in proportions close to their equivalence ratios; at an excess of either substance they do not precipitate: only soluble complexes are formed. Noncomplex forming or simple precipitating substances, on the other hand, closely conform to solubility product rules. Anionic and cationic surfactants, as well as antigens and their corresponding antibodies are complex forming substances. BaSO4 is typical of noncomplex forming precipitates. It can be shown that within the relatively short time necessary for two diffusing complex forming substances to meet and precipitate in a gel, the initial precipitate band will always form in the same place, which is solely determined by the diffusion coefficients of the reacting compounds, irrespective of their initial concentrations, (as long as these are high enough to allow a precipitate to form). Experimental use can be made of this phenomenon for the estimation of diffusion coefficients of complex forming compounds as well as for the determination of their equivalence ratios. The place of first formation of noncomplex forming precipitates in gel double diffusion depends on the diffusion coefficients of the reagents as well as on their concentration and their solubility product, and can be predicted to occur in two places at once. This prediction is confirmed experimentally." @default.
