- W3148264260 abstract "Question 78 of the first part of Aquinas’ famous Summa theologiae concerns human psychology, in particular the ‘powers’ (potentiae) or faculties of the human soul. In article 4, Aquinas wonders whether the sensory part of the human soul has been properly divided into a certain number of external senses, such as sight or hearing, and a certain number of so-called internal or inner senses, such as imagination, memory, and estimation. Generally speaking, the inner senses process the information received by the external senses. Since humans share many, if not all, sensory powers with nonhuman animals, Aquinas tries to determine the commonalities and differences between human and nonhuman animal cognition. His article is not the only late-medieval text on this subject, but its great popularity makes it a cornerstone of medieval philosophy of animal minds." @default.
