• W3148494077 abstract "Conventional plating / coating techniques like hard-chrome plating suffer from a serious drawback of being environmentally non-friendly. As a result, advanced surface engineering techniques such as electro-less nickel coating, thermal spraying etc. are being increasingly used to replace these conventional surface protection methods. In the present work, the effect of surface engineering treatment by thermal spraying on rotating bending fatigue life of En-24 steel have been investigated. The En-24 steel shaft samples were subjected to thermal spraying (by flame spraying technique) using aluminaandzirconia powders. The characterization of base material and coating was done in term of chemical composition, microstructure, surface roughness and hardness. The rotating bending fatigue tests were conducted at various stress levels to obtain S-N curves. Basquin type relationships for alternating stress versus cycles to failure have been developed. Based on the fatigue test results, modification factors for fatigue stress were established. The data clearly indicates that the fatigue life of base material decreases as a result of thermal spraying." @default.
