- W3148609 abstract "Some results of mass spectrometer measurements of the turbopause height ht in the equatorial atmosphere are presented. It is found that this height varies from 92 to 115 km. No pronounced dependence of ht on season, local time or solar activity is determined. There seems to be a tendency for ht to decrease with increasing geomagnetic activity and with increasing temperature at 120 km. It is well known that atmospheric turbulence plays an important role in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere, influencing the thermal balance of the upper atmos-sphere as well as the distribution of the different atmospheric constituents [1-3]. In some theoretical studies [4-6], attempts have been made to study some parameters of the turbulence (e.g. eddy diffusion coefficient, turbopause level) starting from satellite mass spectrometer data. There are also some measurements of the turbulence, made with the help of luminescent clouds [7], radio meteors [8] and noble gas ratio analysis [9]. The results exhibit much scatter; as the number of measurements is also relatively small, no definite conclusions on systematic variations of the turbulence regime can be made. Thus attempts to obtain information on turbopause height ht from rocket mass spectrometer measurements are pertinent." @default.
