- W3149083739 abstract "This chapter investigates the economy of violence at work in Things as They Are; or, the Adventures of Caleb Williams by focusing on the thief-taker Gines and the significance Godwin attached to him, emphasised by changing his name from the second edition onwards. It places Gines in the context of Godwin’s evolving concerns over violence and vehemence in conservative and radical culture during the 1790s. I show how Godwin uses hitherto unrecognised allusion and etymologies to deepen Gines’s symbolic significance. His and Caleb’s connection to a gang of robbers and to popular print reflect Godwin’s anxieties over violence in political and print culture in the 1790s. The novel registers Godwin’s fears over the increasing populism and polarisation of the public sphere." @default.
