- W3149187621 abstract "Britain and the United States. The major emphasis of the contributors is on the experience with drug addiction. Included among the topics dealing with drug dependence are the programs for prevention, control and treatment in New York State, the United States, and Great Britain; specific means of treatment, e.g., self-help groups, narcotic antagonists (cyclazocine, naloxone, nalorphine), and methadone maintenance; and the development, action, and characteristics of specific drugs. The history of drug use and the administrative and legislative action directed toward its prevention and control are covered in considerable detail. Alcoholism is given much less space, although some recent evidence on its etiology, syndrome of chemical dependence. and reversibility is presented in a discussion of its status as a disease. A chapter dealing with the interdependence of medicine and law includes sections on both alcohol and drug addiction. Unfortunately there is a fair amount of overlap between the chapters, and no specific attempt was made to link the contributed works by introduction, conclusion, or editorial comments. The research and treatment findings presented in some chapters seem to be rather selective, with some relatively insignificant inclusions and a few important omissions. Nevertheless, this book should be of particular interest to those concerned with the contemporary British system of handling drug dependence and ensuing problems in attempting to assess minimum dosages needed by addicts.
