- W3149300734 abstract "The heavy metal cadmium (Cd) pollution in paddy soil is harmful to food safety worldwide, especially in East Asia regions where rice is the staple food. Genetic diversity exists in rice germplasm for traits such Cd uptake, translocation, and distribution in rice grains; however, these traits are highly variable and are influenced by environmental factors such as water and pH values in rice fields. Recently, multiple transporters have been identified and characterized that were responsible for Cd uptake and translocation in rice. The gene knockout rice or the natural variant allele varieties have shown significantly alleviated grain Cd accumulation. In addition, many genetic regulators, such as kinases, transcriptional factors, small peptides, miRNAs, and so on, were also involved in grain Cd accumulation. Irrigation during the whole growth period of rice can efficiently block active Cd release from soil, thus lowering grain Cd. In addition, higher pH values, Cd chelation, and rhizospheric microorganisms are beneficial conditions to reduce rice Cd uptake. Molecular design and gene pyramiding breeding techniques provide effective approaches for developing highly efficient low-cadmium rice varieties for ensuring food safety." @default.
