- W3149611938 abstract "This refreshing new book is useful to a variety of audiences interested in reproductive biotechnologies. For most subjects, little background knowledge is necessary, as a solid body of the current literature is presented through a gradual transition from the basics to more detail. Not only does the book serve as a valuable and comprehensive resource for veterinary practitioners, scientists, and students, but it is also a suitable reference for the curious general audience. The main focus of this book is the comparison of reproduction in farm and companion animals with brief references to other species. While the first half of the book addresses the comparative features of reproductive biology, the remaining half is dedicated almost entirely to reproductive techniques including transgenic animals, gender selection, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, embryo freezing and transfer, animal cloning, pregnancy diagnosis, and ultrasonography. With such an impressive coverage of biotechnologies, titling the book “Reproductive Biology and Technologies” may have been a more accurate description of its content. Given the growing interest in recent reproductive biotechnologies, the extended coverage provided is indeed a valuable and unique feature of the book.Although comprehensive in many aspects and obviously contemporary in its discussion of new reproductive technologies, the book is lacking on such relevant areas as prepubertal development, estrus cycle, parturition, lactation, and reproductive endocrinology or behavior. Moreover, future editions may benefit from redistributing the weight given to different subjects. For instance, the chapter “Comparative reproductive physiology of domestic animals,” which should be substantial for a book with a similar title, is only 14 out of 402 pages. Placentation, however, has been generously covered in 2 chapters totaling 61 pages. Furthermore, while ultrasonography in small ruminant reproduction is discussed very nicely in a 27 page chapter, the use of ultrasonography in other species is not mentioned.Although the hundreds of helpful and high quality images and schematic diagrams that appear throughout the book complement the text, the prevalence of black and white figures gives a drab appearance to the book at first glance. However, the inclusion of some 68 pictures in the color plate section, some of which are duplicates of the black and white histology and fluorescent images, along with an attractive hard cover make the book a very good value at US$129.Most of the contributing authors are renowned experts in their fields and, with the exception of a few inaccurate facts (common in most first-edition books), all authors have presented their materials in a simple, clear, concise, and, for the most part, jargon-free and informative manner. However, the writing style is not homogenous throughout the text; some chapters are written in the form of classical textbooks with little or no reference list, while others are written in the form of review papers with hundreds of citations. Nonetheless, this book has sufficient depth and detail to be recommended as a textbook for courses in reproduction, even at the graduate level.Overall, this book was a joy to read with straightforward yet comprehensive answers to a wide range of questions, especially related to reproductive biotechnologies in domestic species." @default.
