- W3149679375 abstract "Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) were the first identified, and still the best characterized, stem cell population. They are also the only stem cell population used in routine clinical practice. The history of our understanding of HSC and the introduction of bone marrow transplantation, followed by mobilized blood and cord blood transplants, has multiple lessons for both the basic science and the clinical application of other stem cell populations. On the basic science side, the early work was geared towards identifying which single cell type comprised the true long-term, self-renewing population. Recent results have upended the conclusions from those earlier studies and have shown that in fact there are multiple populations of HSC with variable differentiative potentials. On the clinical side, the rush to use stem cell transplantation for conditions such as breast cancer led to inappropriate and even fraudulent treatment of patients. This chapter reviews the history, science, clinical applications, bioethics and pharmacoeconomics of the use of hematopoietic stem cells." @default.
