- W3150034873 abstract "Classical music, as it is practised in North India now, traces its origin from a treatise called the 'Natyashastra' of early Christian period, but music as part of ritual or aid to memorising texts has even earlier roots. The tradition of imparting knowledge was oral with a minimal use of the written word. Recorded, written material was necessary only as a key to reminder, areminder to the storehouse of knowledge gathered through the master-disciple system of oral instruction. While lack of documentation makes it difficult to chronicle a precise historical development over about 2000 years, it is generally agreed that definitive references to the precursors of contemporary genres of art music are available from the 13th century onwards 1• By tbis time, Muslim rule was well-established in North India with both Sultans and Sufi saints creating centres of musical performance. It is not surprising, therefore, that witbin a short period, Persian musical concepts started influencing the existing musical system, giving North Indian music, wbich had got rather structured and bound within a rigid frame2, a new freedom. Under the patronage of Hindu-Muslim courts, new genres of performance practice in a composite style started evolving a style that continues till today. In tbis over seven hundred years of changing political, economic and social milieu, music developed along two streams, one consisting of academics and the other, of performers. The scholars wrote commentaries, interpreted Sanskritic aesthetics and carried on research in an open, written academic tradition, not very different from that of medieval Europe. The performer, however, had to tread an entirely different path, a tight-rope walk between disclosure and secrecy, an optimisation act between present returns and future hold, with no legal guarantee anywhere." @default.
