- W3150201721 abstract "Paraquat poisoning may be developed by various routes: skin, conjunctiva, parenteral, and most frequently by ingestion. The paraquat, or 1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dichloride is a highly toxic herbicide, and because of this in some countries it has been severely restricted or has even been banned and taken off the market. It is restricted in Colombia. The paraquat acts in humans as it acts on plants, by the same biochemical processes generating free radicals that damage cell membranes causing lung, kidney and liver injury, with a clinical picture characterized by three phases: gastrointestinal phase; hepatorenal phase; and pulmonary fibrosis. This paper reports a case of paraquat intoxication with autolytic purposes, where the female patient evolved towards improvement due to the treatment received. Prompt treatment is crucial in the prognosis of a patient poisoned by paraquat." @default.
