- W3150658547 abstract "The exocytotic release of catecholamines from bovine adrenal chromaffin cells is normally triggered by nicotinic receptor-activated influx of extracellular Ca2+ (15,28, 33), and a subsequent increase in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration (36). Ba2+ alone or membrane depolarization in the presence of Ca2+ also stimulates exocytosis. Although the mechanism of exocytosis was first de scribed using biochemical techniques in the adrenal medulla (see Reference 64 for review), the underlying mechanisms triggered by Ca2+ are not understood. Fusion of artificial vesicles with planar bilayer membranes requires an osmotic gradient across the vesicle membrane, which causes water entry and swelling of the vesicles (10) (see Finkelstein et al, this volume). The chromaffin granule, the secretory granule within chromffin cells, lyses in hypo-osmotic solutions. The possibility that osmotic stress on the chromaffin granule is a driving force in exocytosis has been raised by a number of investigators and will be critically evaluated in this review." @default.
