- W3151058870 abstract "Niobium, as ferroniobium alloy, has a wide range of applications in steelmaking, used to produce High Strength Low Alloy steel (HSLA). These steels are used in a wide array of industrial, infrastructure, and high technology applications. The benefits of microalloying steel with niobium are substantial and lead to reduced cost of material and improved performance. Niobium is predominantly mined in Brazil and Canada. Material availability determines the ‘importance’ a mineral has for a nation. Critical minerals are defined as a mineral that is directly needed for the national and economic well-being of a nation. Criticality is mostly influenced by geographic availability, years of technical experience in processing, ease of substitutability, and a nation’s efforts to classify their resources with criticality designations. Different nations have unique approaches and methodologies for material classification. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the importance or criticality of niobium in Canada. Canada produces approximately 10% of the 120,000 tonnes of Fe-Nb worldwide produced in 2019, making it a prime target for an evaluation such as this. It was determined that niobium is indeed moderately critical when assessed in the Canadian sphere than currently perceived based on the American National Research Council’s methodology of material classification. With that knowledge, it is necessary to continue studying critical minerals in Canada and focusing on developing the markets of those that have the potential to drive growth in the Canadian mineral sector by developing and implementing policy dedicated to boosting critical mineral production." @default.
