- W3151878172 abstract "Abstract Chang’E-3 landed on the east of Sinus Iridumarea on December 14, 2013, performing China’s first suc-cessful soft landing on the lunar surface. We present theresults on precision orbit determination and positioning ofthe lander and the rover. We describe the data, modeling,and methods used to achieve position knowledge over theperiod December 2–21, 2014. In addition to the radiometricX-band range and Doppler tracking data, delta differentialone-way ranging data are also used in the calculation,which show that they strongly improve the accuracy of theorbit reconstruction. Total position overlap differences areabout 20 and 30 m for the 100 km 9 100 km and100 km9 15 km lunar orbit, respectively, increased by*50 % with respect to CE-2 and at the same level as otherlunar spacecrafts of recent era such as SELENE and lunarreconnaissance orbiter (LRO). The position error of the softlanding trajectory is less than 100 m. A kinematic statis-tical method is applied to determine the position of thelander and relative position of the rover with respect to thelander. The position difference of the lander is better than50 m compared to LRO photograph result. Compared withthe delta very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) groupdelay between the lander and the rover, the delta VLBIphase delay can improve the relative position of the roverfrom *1,000 to *1m.Keywords Chang’E-3 Orbit determination Lander Rover1 IntroductionThe first Chinese lunar probe CE-1 was launched on 2007,and following CE-2 was launched on 2010 [1–5], achievingthe goal of orbital exploration of the Moon. The CE-3 lunarprobe was launched from Xichang Satellite Center onDecember 2, 2013. After about 112 h of flight, it wascaptured by the Moon on December 6 and entered a polar,near circular lunar orbit with an altitude of approximately100 km. The probe’s flight on 100 km 9 100 km and100 km 9 15 km orbit lasted about 4 days, respectively,and then, the probe soft landed on the east of Sinus Iridumarea at 21:11 BJT (UTC?8 h) on December 14 success-fully. It was the first time for China to send a probe to softland on the surface of an extraterrestrial body and alsomade China the third country that realized landed explo-ration of the Moon independently.The X-band radiometric range/Doppler and very longbaseline interferometry (VLBI) techniques were used inCE-3 mission to track the probe. Measurement accuracywas improved for the application of some new equipmentand techniques. Newly founded deep space stations ofChina, Jiamusi and Kashgar, with antenna aperture of 66and 35 m, respectively, participated in CE-3 mission. Withthe replacement of Sheshan 25 m radio telescope byTianma 65-m telescope in Shanghai, the VLBI networkimproved its tracking ability that consisted of Tianma,Beijing (50 m), Kunming (40 m), and Urumchi (25 m)." @default.
