- W315192054 abstract "Floating Car Data (FCD) is a way of gathering data from moving vehicles, called probes. These data normally contain information about the position and speed of the probes, but it is also possible to measure other aspects such as weather conditions and road surface conditions. Recently, in The Netherlands a field operational test has been done using FCD to estimate travel times in an urban environment. The purpose of this project was to show to government and industry that this technique is feasible and can be used to give better and more reliable information to road users. In the pilot differential GPS (Global Positioning System) was used to measure the position of the vehicle and GSM to send this information to a central computer. The coordinates of the positions were used to match it to a road segment of a digital network. From these matched positions travel times were estimated for road segments, links and routes. The estimated travel times were distributed via a regional traffic information center and the internet and proved to be fairly accurate. For all applications of FCD it is necessary to know on which roads the vehicles are traveling. For that purpose in most applications a digital network is used. The production and maintenance of these networks requires a lot of work and resources, but the greatest disadvantage is the inherent static nature of the current digital networks. Real road networks have a dynamic nature: new roads are built and old ones are reconstructed. Also temporarily changes such as road works and accidents have their influence on the network. It takes a lot of time to incorporate the permanent changes into the digital networks and it is almost impossible to account for the temporary changes. To overcome this problem it is necessary to change the point of view. Normally the digital network is taken as the basis to match the floating car measurements. But it is also possible to take the measurements as the basis for the digital network! The thought behind this is simple: where there are vehicles, there must be a road. The work described in these paper was part of a project that also included research on effects of providing information on mobility, applications of FCD, necessary percentage of probes for certain applications and route choice behavior. In the following paragraphs the algorithm to derive road networks from floating car measurements is described. The algorithm was also tested for a part of the road network of the city of Eindhoven in The Netherlands. The results of this case study are also given." @default.
