• W3152452910 abstract "In many projects today, epoxy composite materials (ECMs) are generally preferable over other materials. Thanks to their properties such as high mechanical strength, low weight, and great chemical and thermal resistance, many engineering projects have become more viable, because of ECMs and, in many cases, the application of ECMs is the only viable alternative for a project. This chapter presents the widespread applications in current projects in many industries, such as automotive, aeronautical, and marine industries, highlighting how a number of items found in daily life are either directly or indirectly linked to ECMs. Humanhealth and safety issues related to such materials are also presented. Another important factor to take into consideration while designing a project involving ECM utilization concerns the environmental issues linked to the life cycle of the resulting products. Therefore, the end-of-life management of such products is discussed, showing the main considerations and alternatives to considerer beginning in the early stages to increase the sustainability of an application. However, it is important to note that ECMs are multipurpose thermoset materials, and common traditional recycling methods are not very efficient for recycling their derived products. Therefore, alternative solutions together with new recycling methods are presented with the corresponding effects on the environment. These new methods offer more environment friendly solutions and open new possibilities by conserving a large portion of the original mechanical proprieties that make ECMs desirable and by adding commercial value for potential applications.
