- W3152602022 abstract "Dr Donna Coleman, pianist, performs and provides commentary about solo works by composers associated with the Second New England School of Composition, also known as Boston to create a context for the music of Charles Ives. The Boston Six includes John Knowles Paine, George Whitefield Chadwick, Arthur Foote, Edward MacDowell, Horatio William Parker, Amy Cheney Beach. The Plus Two are Charles Edward Ives (who studied with Parker) and Scott Joplin (who was creating Ragtime in the same era as The Boston Six were still working within the context of German Romanticism). In the period commencing mid-nineteenth century (encompassing the United States Civil War) through the end of the First and Second World Wars, the centenary of the first of which is now being commemorated around the world, the United States produced a group of composers clustered around the important American metropolitan center Boston, Massachusetts. Also known as The Second New England School, their compositional style was grounded initially in the German Romantic Tradition (ala Schumann and Brahms), later demonstrating the influence of French composers such as Debussy, Franck, Faure and even later, Russian composer Skryabin.Plus One: Although Charles Edward Ives is not officially considered to be part of the Second New England School, his teacher at Yale University was Horatio Parker, who studied with George Whitefield Chadwick. Chadwick studied organ with Dudley Buck, as did Ives (briefly). Paine, Chadwick, Foote, Parker, and Ives were all concert organists as well as composers.Plus Two: Midwest-born Scott Joplin was a contemporary of the Boston Six, and he created dozens of beautiful Rags—America’s true Classical music—that stand alongside their work. Charles Ives heard Ragtime as a young man, and this “Vernacular” style is one of many that he incorporated into his grand, “Cultivated” music sonatas, symphonies, and songs." @default.
