- W3153766806 abstract "While the defects studied in Chaps. 11 and 12 were physical objects that actually break the translational invariance of the host, the treatment in this chapter is of formal defects in perfectly symmetrical systems in which there are no physical defects. The defects analyzed arose from mathematical terms in the governing equations. The method was applied to the problem of calculating the scattering function in a quantum mechanical system described by the so-called stochastic Liouville equation obeyed by the density matrix. Next, the problem for which the defect technique application was originally extended in this fashion for non-physical defects, the mutual annihilation of Frenkel excitons moving on a lattice, was explained. Annihilation rates and constants computed from the theory were displayed for various dimensions and it was indicated how coherence effects in the motion are incorporated. Finally, for our third example of non-physical defects, related methods were applied on the basis of a Smoluchowski equation to the study of the transmission of infection in the spread of epidemics such as the Hantavirus and the time-dependence of the infection curve was obtained." @default.
