Lanham, MD: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 2012. 295 pp. In almost three hundred pages Michael Hall accomplishes what it would take a team of Haitian historians to summarize--a historical dictionary of Haitian people, events and statistics--from A to Zed. Dr. Hall takes every opportunity to offer a seamless narrative of Haitian history and never fails to connect similar topics and subject matter as he presents a formal reference document that traces era-based themes and concepts that integrate themselves in every aspect of Haitian life. The book's overall contents include a chronology of seminal events beginning with Christopher Columbus' discovery of the island and its inhabitants in 1492 to the election and inauguration of Haiti's current President Michel Martelly in May of 2011. However, one must not confuse Hall's list of events as just 'events' in Haiti's history. If so one would miss the attention he gives to the thorough presentation of occurrences both inside and outside of Haiti as well as those that occur simultaneously. The chronology itself is a statistical literature review of Haitian history and as such could stand alone as summary CliffNotes. The chronology is logically followed by the Introduction where Dr. Hall presents a synopsis of more than 500 years of history into a shortened version of Haitian territory and geography, population and demography and, of course, Haitian history. The Introduction presents a reaffirmation of the chronology highlighting the tipping points of Haitian history that have come to flavor the current manifestation of the Haitian community and governmental structure. Acting as an annotated checklist, the Bibliography section offers the reader paginated references to subtitles within the book, an Introduction to the bibliographical content and more than 16 pages of a well-versed and current list of scholarly writings and references under numerous subject matter headings including the often omitted category of Remittances. While scholars of Haitian government and economy note the long tradition of the storied presidency, Dr. Hall reminds us in the Appendix of the book of the newness of the position of Prime Minister in Haiti noting the first Prime Minister, Martial Celestin, came to office in 1988. The alphabetical text weaves the Haitian narrative into each individual dictionary entry. Unlike the brevity found in traditional dictionaries, Historical Dictionary of Haiti follows the model of full summary discussion with internal cross references visible by bold text. A few references such as those related to the Griot movement of the 1930's, which encouraged both the adoption of an African-based political system and the adoption of Voodoo as Haiti's national religion, should be included in the appropriate categories especially since the movement produced Presidents Estime (1946), Magloire (1950) and Papa Doc Duvalier (1957). …" @default.
