- W3154690689 abstract "Bronte’s novel at once obscures and reveals the flow of energetic, natural, and economic resources. At the same time, the novel troubles its own manifestly anthropocentric uses of nature and energy. Further, Jane’s seductive narrative of heroic independence, so powerfully articulated as she aspires to be recognized as a fully-fledged independent individual, also reproduces the structures of mastery that exclude her and others from ethical consideration. These run contrary to a picture of the network of relationships that make up an ecological vision. This chapter therefore works toward an ecocentric rereading of Jane Eyre in particular and the liberal subject more broadly. In this reading, Jane figures not as the heroine with all else as the background against which she moves, but rather as one element among many in the constantly shifting relations of an ecosystem. And while it may be uncomfortable, even counterintuitive, for feminist readers, to trouble the centrality of the individual just as this model of personhood becomes available to women, this reading draws on the works of eco-feminists Kate Soper, Val Plumwood, and Ursula Le Guin, in order to find in Jane Eyre a model of sympathetic ecology. Further, taking its cue from post-colonial revisions of the story of Bertha Rochester, this chapter considers the problematics of relegating human or nonhuman nature to mere setting, background, margin, or resource." @default.
