- W3154807659 abstract "Given the linguistic and cultural diversity associated with English use in global contexts, it is critical for teachers to develop awareness of relationships between language, culture, and individual identities. Problematically, English language teaching (ELT) traditionally links English use to a perceived “authenticity” in “native” English-speaker “standards,” overlooking variability in effective English use globally. Moreover, ELT often treats culture as fact-based knowledge, risking stereotypes by linking individuals inseparably to their national cultures. This section outlines a teacher education activity in the form of a “Find someone who ...” task to encourage critical awareness of relationships between language, culture, and individual identities. The task is organized in three categories: culture and identity, communication, and teaching assumptions. Awareness through reflection on these relationships as well as on the implications of traditional ELT practices may help teachers reconsider their own assumptions about teaching English. It may lead to adapted teaching practices which reflect the multilingual and multicultural realities of English use in the world." @default.
