- W3154991305 abstract "The discussion began with how, when facing the bewildering variety of motions that one witnesses in nature, viewing them in terms of the memory formalism helps unify extremes and provides a description of any intermediate degree of coherence. This power of the formalism stems from the basic nature of memory functions rather than from any particular detail. A damped harmonic oscillator and the telegrapher’s equation, with its limits of the wave and the diffusion equations, illustrated the situation. A simple example (the railway track model) showed how memories arise when one chooses to examine only a part of a given system. How memory functions can arise in quantum systems was explained next, an attempt being made to involve the reader in calculating results right from the beginning of the book, ensuring thereby an active process of learning. An overview of the various fields of research, ranging from fundamental studies of photosynthesis and sensitized luminescence to applied investigations of NMR microscopy and granular compaction, in which memories help naturally, was given." @default.
