- W3156103003 abstract "This chapter examines historical concepts of religious education in Alevism by focusing particularly on the so-called Buyruk writings, which date back to the sixteenth century and are considered a constitutive source of Alevi religiosity. The chapter breaks down the question of religious education in Alevism by engaging with its objectives, agents, and places as well as modes. Since the chapter refers mainly to religious textual sources, it addresses historical theory rather than the practical implementation. While the main educational objective is, according to the Buyruks, individual self-awareness, the path to this knowledge is entirely embedded in socio-religious community life. The social structure of education comprises both vertical relations between religious teachers (murebbī) and disciples (ṭālib) and horizontal relations within discipleship such as spiritual companionship (muṣāḥiblik). The bond between teachers and disciples is mainly built around a mimetic relationship. Besides transmitting knowledge, teachers have to embody the religious values and be living examples through their actions and conditions, which the disciples adopt by observing. Comparable to other Sufi-related groups, the mimetic relationship between teacher and disciple requires, from the latter, subordination and obedience. The Buyruks seem to limit the risk of instrumentalization resulting from this obedience through a concept of mutual consent (rizāliḳ), demanding a reciprocal consensus between teacher and disciple." @default.
