- W315697410 abstract "Of Prairie, Woods, & Water: Two Centuries of Chicago Nature Writing. Edited by Joel Greenberg. (Chicago and London: The University of Chicago. Pp. xxi, 402 pp, $25.00.) Inspired by Nature: The Garfield Park Conservatory and Chicago's West Side. By Julia S. Bachrach and Jo Ann Nathan. (Chicago, Illinois: The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance in association with the Chicago Park District. Pp. ix, 150 pp., $25.00.) A Man of Salt and Trees The Life of Joy Morton. By James Ballowe. (DeKaIb, Illinois, Northern Illinois University Press. Pp. xv, 302 Cloth, $28.95.) The powerful attachment that most people feel to the natural world figures in each of these books, but to varying degrees and in different ways. As its title suggests, Of Prairie, Woods, & jumps into the subject feet first, and never leaves. Assigned under the headings Landscape, Botany, Land Animals, Water Worlds and Mindscapes, the editor offers up a diverse collection of direct observations of nature in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana down through the years, to which he adds biographical detail on the authors where he can find it. Most of the authors are naturalists, but the collection is leavened by a number of contributions from amateurs. I had thought perhaps that reading these essays would be a forced march as the subject is not one to which I gravitate. But the works almost immediately recalled to me a boyhood which included a fair amount of insect collecting and butterfly netting, so I very much enjoyed the collection. I think any lover of nature will also enjoy these selections, notwithstanding that some of them are heavy on taxonomic terminology. Their descriptions of the natural world are in the main very fine, and an occasional piece is even quite gripping, like the account of a mid-nineteenth century prairie fire just west of Dwight. In addition, many have good descriptions of how our local habitats function, and embedded in a few of them are insights on matters only loosely related to their main subject, such as one writer's observation that the prairie's superabundance of game was a precondition to its relatively rapid settlement, as less time required to get the day's bread meant that more could be devoted to clearing and building in the prairie's hostile environment. Historians of nineteenth century and even early twentieth century Illinois may find these essays consciousness-raising as well, for many of them either by choice or by chance provide good descriptions of elements of daily life in Illinois in earlier times and thus illustrate the enormous gap that exists between the milieu in which we live our lives and write our history books and the much more nature-rich and nature-controlled environment in which our forebears existed as they created that history. This enhanced immediacy of the natural world is reflected in the keenness with which the writers of these essays observed their surroundings, since the state of play in that world at any given time mattered and in fact mattered very much, and clear-eyed and sustained observation was one of the few predictive and adaptive tools our forebears had for contending with whatever nature had to offer. The separation of ever larger numbers of city-dwelling people from the natural environment is lamented in many of the essays in Of Prairie, Woods, & Water, particularly the later-dated ones, and that separation is the predicate for Inspired by Nature, since its main thrust is to tell the story of the creation and elaboration of Chicago's Garfield Park and its famous Conservatory, both of which were examples of society's response to that growing separation. Inspired by Nature is a book born of civic pride, so it follows a plan rather different from that of most books on history. The celebratory nature of the work accounts for the acknowledgements, the foreword, the two epilogues, and also a brief description of the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance. …" @default.
