- W3157263732 abstract "In many organizations, the best-performing employees are not always promoted. This study experimentally examines a reason that this may occur. We design a vertical competition where promoted employees enter into a competition with their managers. In this setting, managers generally fail to promote their best employee, in particular if this employee seems better than them. However, we find that a perspective manipulation designed to generate cognitive dissonance can nudge them to amend their behavior when their promotion recommendations are visible to their employees. Our findings have far-reaching implications because organizations failing to promote their best employees may risk antagonizing them." @default.
