- W3157374811 abstract "The province of La Union has 12 coastal towns where most of its fishermen depend on marine resources like mollusks for both their food and livelihood. With the existing problems of our marine resources such as pollution, indiscriminate overfishing, mollusks resources has been greatly affected, making the supply very limited, thus, fishermen could hardly earn income from gathering mollusks. Stock assessment of mollusks in La Union will provide benchmark information on the volume of catch, distribution and seasonability of selected species of mollusks in La Union that could served as references for policy makers to strengthen and improve existing policies rules and regulation on fisheries resources management. The study was conducted in four sampling stations: Darigayos, LunaDulao, AringayRaois, Sto. Tomasand Damortis, Rosario, coastal towns of La Union. Four enumerators were hired mainly to collect data from the 142 fishermen respondents' daily. Researches also conducted actual fishing monthly in the four stations. Data collected started in August 1995 and was completed in December 1996. There were 13 commercially important mollusks inhabiting the four (4) stations: Loligo spp. (pusit), Octupos spp. (kurita), Asprella spp. (kaluit), Ostre spp. (tirem), Gari costulata (onnok), Nocula nuclea (bennek), Tagelus plbeius (kaw-kawayan), Scapharca inequivulvis (sombaboy) clams (sungotan), Pharus legumen (kasiw), Berthalinia chloris (ping-pinggan), Amussium japonicum (kampis), and Auger turritela (dawdaw). Among the four stations, station 3 had the most number of species of mollusks colleted. Peak season of mollusks occured from February-April and a lean month was November. In terms of volume of catch, oysters ranked first during the conduct of the study with an average volume of catch, oysters ranked first during the conduct of the study with an average volume of harvest of 66.738kg or 87.07% of the total mollusks catch for the period. On the other hand, Pharus legumen got the least catch of 50 kg or only 0.07% of the total mollusks catch. Results also showed that mollusks were bigger and heavier during February and September and smaller and lighter during January and November. For the one-year study, price of mollusks was high on December and low during March-April." @default.
