- W3157657293 abstract "Because of the rapid depletion of fossil fuels, the concept of biorefineries has been promoted to meet the world’s energy demands while achieving the goal of net-zero carbon emissions. One promising method for future fuel production is converting biomass into bio-oil and then upgrading it over suitable catalysts. Bio-oil synthesis can be accomplished by fast pyrolysis, which has been identified as one of the most feasible routes. Fast pyrolysis of biomass leads to the formation of a number of gas, liquid, and solid products, among which bio-oil can be further upgraded to improve the quality of the biofuel and bioproducts. However, bio-oil obtained by the fast pyrolysis process has a high acidity, high viscosity, high oxygen content, and low heating value, which make it incompatible for use as a transport fuel. To improve these properties, bio-oil needs to be upgraded over one or more catalysts, for which hydrotreating is an effective method. Steam reforming, hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), and catalytic cracking are the most important processes for hydrotreating using innovative catalysts and reactors. The catalytic steam reforming of bio-oil is well-known to produce biohydrogen and syngas, which are the main precursors for the synthesis of Fischer–Tropsch products. The HDO process is carried out at high pressure where hydrogen helps to remove oxygen from bio-oil to yield biofuels that are comparable to fuels obtained from crude oil. Catalytic cracking is an alternative route in which zeolites, such as HZSM-5, are used as catalysts for the deoxygenation reaction. This process is operated at atmospheric pressure and does not require hydrogen. However, extensive carbon deposition results in very short catalyst lifetimes.
