- W3159795110 abstract "Since the advent of lymphangiography and technetium bone scans in the 1960 to 1970s, oncologists have been gaining insights into the biology and clinical course of prostate cancer with noninvasive (or minimally invasive) testing. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brought a new era of high-resolution cross-sectional imaging, but the standard workup of newly diagnosed, recurrent, or metastatic prostate cancer had remained the same for almost 40 years: axial imaging of the abdomen/pelvis and bone scan. The past decade has brought an explosion of new imaging tracers and techniques that have the potential to revolutionize how prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated. Recent imaging modalities have included choline C-11 positron emission tomography (PET), which has had limited clinical uptake, and fluciclovine PET, which is currently only approved for patients with recurrent prostate cancer. The recent US Food and Drug Administration approval of Gallium 68 (68GA) prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-11 PET, both for initial staging and for recurrence after treatment, has brought tremendous excitement to patients and physicians. Indeed, advances in imaging have already shaped the treatment landscape: dose escalation, reduced toxicity owing to shrinking margins, and the emergence of the “oligometastatic” state have all been made possible through constantly improving imaging. However, more research is needed to define the optimal uses of these newer imaging modalities." @default.
