- W3159805563 abstract "Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease considered to be an important cause of bovine reproductive failure worldwide. Caused by a motile, Gram-negative, obligate aerobic, spirochete bacteria in the genus Leptospira, infections may result in one or more of several different disease outcomes. Although there are numerous species, serovars, serotypes, and serogroups within the genus Leptospira, this chapter focuses on those most commonly implicated in reproductive inefficiency and failure in cattle. Both direct and indirect methods of transmission are important in Leptospira infections of cattle. Clinical outcomes of Leptospira infections in cattle depend primarily on the serovar involved. Accurately diagnosing leptospirosis as the cause of reproductive failure or inefficiency can be challenging for the practitioner and the producer. Control of leptospirosis in cattle requires a comprehensive approach that includes reducing the risk of Leptospira exposure by interrupting direct and indirect routes of transmission, vaccination, and selective antimicrobial treatment to clear carriers of serovar Hardjo when indicated." @default.
