- W3160337907 abstract "Rationale: Although body mass index (BMI) has been known as prognostic factor in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), little has been reported regarding the role of BMI in Asian COPD patients. Methods: This study analyzed data obtained from the Korean COPD Subgroup Study cohort (KOCOSS). Baseline characteristics including BMI were analyzed. Prospective follow up data of exacerbation were also analyzed. Results: The number of patients enrolled in this analysis was 1,541. Data are expressed as mean ± SEM or number of patients (%). Mean age was 70.5 ± 0.2. FEV1 (%) was 55.6 ± 0.5. SGRQ-C score was 34.4 ± 0.5. BMI was 22.8 ± 0.1. BMI was significantly correlated with FEV1(%) (R = 0.21, P < 0,01), Age (R = -0.07, P < 0.01), and SGRQ-C (R = -0.14, P < 0.01). Information for exacerbations during 6 months follow up were available in 837 patients. Among them, 162 (19.4%) experienced exacerbation. In binary logistic regression, SGRQ-C [hazard ratio (HR): 1.021, 95% CI: 1.011-1.030, P < 0.01] and FEV1 (%) were significant factors for predicting exacerbation. (HR: 0.987, 95% CI: 0.975-0.998, P = 0.027). However, BMI was not a significant factor for predicting exacerbation (HR: 1.050, 95% CI: 0.997-1.106, P = 0.063). Conclusion: BMI in Korean COPD patients is lower than previous report from western countries. During 6 months follow up, BMI was not a significant factor for predicting exacerbation. Further study regarding the role of BMI in Asian COPD patients are needed." @default.
