• W3161114646 abstract "Purpose: Aging is a continuous and progressive process, in which morphological, functional, biochemical, social and psychological changes occur. This perspective is loaded with meaning for whoever knows people who need care in this specialty: generally elderly people, with chronic-degenerative diseases, long hospitalizations and a high mortality rate. The purpose of study is to explore the lived experience of aging in older adults.Methods: Data were collected through a face-to-face interview by a convenient sampling. Fourteen subjects participated in this study. The interviews conducted between 40 to 45 minutes. The interviews were transcribed verbatim in order to explore the participants’ lived experiences. The interviewed data were analyzed based on Giorgi’s method. Inclusion criteria were older adults age 65 or above experiencing aging process that is associated with changes in dynamic biological, physiological, environmental, psychological, behavioral, and social processes.Results: The average age of the 14 participants was 67.41(±2.03). The majority was retired (n=11; 78.6%), high school diploma earned (n=10; 71.4%), no religious affiliation (n=9; 64.3%), middle class socioeconomic status (n=11; 78.6%), their number of children varied from 0 to 4, and former professional occupations (n=8; 57.1%). According to the contents analysis, there were 4 themes classified: ‘shedding new light on’, ‘expanding the vision’, ‘changes in daily lives and hope’, and ‘constructing new philosophies and attitudes’. In the ‘shedding new light on’ theme, 3 categories were classified: ‘engaging the now while rolling with the vicissitudes of life’, ‘grateful abiding in wondering awareness’, and ‘buoyant unburdening amidst shifting rhythms’. In the ‘expanding the vision’ theme, 3 categories were classified: ‘new possibilities with refined astuteness’, ‘propelling discovery through enlivening connectedness’, and ‘affirming self through altruistic commitments’. In the ‘changed in daily lives and hope’ theme, 2 categories were classified: ‘cherishing the rapture of celebration with significant others’, and ‘changing customs for new possibilities’. In the ‘constructing new philosophies and attitudes’ theme, 3 categories were classified: ‘reconstructing relationship with children’, ‘forming a rhythmical pattern about life and death’, and ‘developing self-reflective consciousness’.Conclusion: Aging is a sequential, individual, irreversible, non-pathological process marked by the exhaustion of a mature organism, so that time makes them less capable of facing the stress in the environment, which thus increases their possibility of dying. The results of the content analysis reflect that human care is considered the essence of nursing, permeated by values that prioritize peace, freedom, respect and love. For geriatric nursing practice, it is fundamental that the quality of life concept is more highlighted than the cure for the disease concept. The priority is to promote elderly health, not remaining restricted to the pathological condition. Then, caregiving includes the reduction of foreseeable risk factors. The most important objective is to seek the person's best possible performance, in which respect for the other person's autonomy and dignity is fundamental. Thus, old age is such a personal experience that only people who reach the most advanced stages in life can express this experience. Many aspects can be common, plural, but the experience is particular, singular and as distinguished as each face observed in this study.
