- W3161250245 abstract "Pulse-height analyzed (PHA) data from the Relativistic Electron–Proton Telescope (REPT) on the Van Allen Probes are used to investigate the origin of trapped energetic protons. The solar proton source dominates at L >1.5 and energies <100 MeV and the Cosmic Ray Albedo Neutron Decay (CRAND) source, dominates otherwise. The inward diffusion of 10 s of MeV solar protons to L <2 adds to and merges with the preexisting trapped protons in the inner belt. Van Allen Probes have not measured any ~2 MeV electron enhancements inside L ~2.6 for the past six years. However, penetrations of such energetic electrons into L <2.6 were measured previously during periods of stronger solar wind conditions in terms of solar wind speed, interplanetary magnetic field magnitude, and southward Bz. Similarly, very few >1 MeV electrons have been measured at L <2, based on the Magnetic Electron Ion Spectrometer (MagEIS) on the Van Allen Probes, while AE8 and AE9 models, which were developed based on older data, show plenty of >1 MeV electrons at L <2. These differences question whether Van Allen Probes measurements are representative of the dynamics of MeV electrons during previous solar cycles or whether previous electron measurements in the inner belt have been accurate." @default.
