• W3161499211 abstract "Purpose: Most single mothers have been solely responsible for the child care and raising the children. This not only has meant feeding the children and providing them clean clothes to wear and a house to live in, but also spending time with the children, playing with them, calming their fears, disciplining them, and helping them with their homework. The purpose of the study was to explore the lived experience of being a single mother in order to gain an understanding of which aspects of the lives of single mothers felt most salient and what was the most rewarding or demanding experiences about their lives. Methods: A face-to-face interview was conducted for the data collection until the data saturation point reached. Ten single mothers completed the face-to-face interviews with open-ended questions which took approximately 30 to 40 minutes for each. The interview contents were analyzed through thematic analysis using Giorgi’s method. Inclusion criteria were age over 20, and a single mother experiencing raising a child. Results: The average age of the participants was 30.51(±4.18). The participants reported that the number of children varied from 1 to 2. Most of the participants were employed (n=10), college education (n=9), no religious preferences (n=8), divorced (n=7), and low class socioeconomic status (n=6). Participants’ occupations were part-time employees in a small business store or full-time employees in a restaurant, factory, or shopping mall. As a results of the contents analysis, there were 4 themes were analyzed: ‘financial burden’, ‘psychosocial challenges’, ‘role and relationship challenges’, ‘insufficient support system’. In the ‘financial burden’ theme, 3 categories were classified: ‘struggling to meet the basic needs’, ‘shortage of time’, and ‘feeling of bothering others’. In the ‘psychosocial challenges’ theme, 4 categories were classified: ‘loneliness’, ‘anxiety’, ‘difficulties in adjustment’, and ‘feelings of guilt. In the ‘role and relationship challenges’ theme, 3 categories were classified: ‘difficulties in supporting cognitive development’, ‘difficulties in the process of socialization’, and ‘lack of role model’. In the ‘insufficient support system’ theme, 2 categories were classified: ‘unavailable social support system’, and ‘difficult accessibility’. Conclusion: The results explored that single mothers who raise dependent children are faced with multifaceted challenges, including financial scarcity, emotional problems, and social challenges. Thus, there is a need for intervention to help single mothers in order to cope with these challenges. Therefore, the interventions need to include the problem solving skills regarding economic and emotional problems, that empower single mothers and their children, psychologically, economically, and socially. Further research may utilize these findings as baseline data to examine the impact of single motherhood on children’s wellbeing." @default.
