- W3162701288 abstract "In the history of moral philosophy, the problem of morality has been enduring and largely unresolved. This seeming irresolvability has sustained a debate on the philosophical foundations of morality, giving rise to various theories of morality. Utilitarianism, which is one of such theories, is a form of consequentialism and has been regarded as a negative moral theory by some scholars. This has generated heated arguments and also led to the formulation of various brands of utilitarianism, among which is rule-utilitarianism of Richard B. Brandt. Brandt builds his moral theory on what he calls cognitive psychotherapy the process of confronting desire with relevant, vivid information - and denies elements of intuition in his theory. For Brandt, intuition is mere fiction and prejudice. But the role of intuition in moral theorizing seems fundamental that such a denial introduces foundational questions: Can moral theory be developed without recourse to intuition? Can moral dilemma be resolved without an element of intuition? While acknowledging the contributions of Brandt in resolving some of the problems plaguing Utilitarianism, the paper seeks to discuss the implications of his denial of intuition in his Rule-Utilitarianism and to show that Brandt did not only end up employing intuition in developing his moral theory, but that there is a full blown intuitionism in his brand of utilitarianism." @default.
