- W316349516 abstract "The study of Volunteering is vast, as broad as the study of Career Development, in our opinion. Those who dedicate hours the study of and act of volunteering come from many walks of life and help define our nation. According the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), between September 2008 and September 2009, over 26 per cent of Americans, approximately 63 million people, volunteered at least once. The Corporation for National and Community Service (2010) added that volunteering in 2009 provided over 8.1 billion hours of service, worth over 169 billion dollars. Stengel (2010) in a Time magazine article called for a responsibility revolution, in American spending and in volunteer service communities. Ellis and Campbell (2005) stated: Volunteerism is crucial a functioning democracy because it mobilizes enormous energy. The more citizens involve themselves as volunteers in all areas, the closer they come making the ideals of democracy real... Volunteerism is both an expression of patriotism in a pure sense and the means by which a democratic society remains 'by the people.' (p. viii) In this article, we introduce you Volunteering, the topic of this particular issue of the Career Planning and Adult Development Journal. The articles in this issue include one author's (Michalos) description of the connection between volunteer and career development concepts, a review of the Federal Government's Serve America Act (Mawdlsey and Mawdsley), and examples of unique volunteer activities or programs (Beasley; Perera; Toman and Leichtman). To help put the articles of this issue into a common context, we begin with an introduction volunteering. What does it mean volunteer? The word, volunteer, comes from the Latin root, voluntas, meaning free will; most definitions include statements which describe the volunteer as an individual engaged in an activity of one's own choice or free will, offering one's expertise, time, and/or financial support for a common cause. distinguishing feature of volunteering is the absence of monetary reward for one's efforts. Susan Ellis, President of Energize, Inc. (2010), an international firm specializing in voluntarism, defines volunteering as choosing to act in recognition of a need, with an attitude of social responsibility and without concern for monetary profit, going beyond one's basic obligations. Another definition of volunteering was offered by a local government volunteer program in Sacramento, California. Perry (2004) wrote in their Volunteer Today on-line newsletter that: The definition of a volunteer may seem simple, but when we got all our department coordinators together discuss this, it turned out be a lot more complex. We started with this definition, A volunteer is defined as a non-salaried individual who offers services a city department or affiliated non-profit agency. We then expanded it by looking at the terms of service [on-going and short-term] as a way define different groups of volunteers and then created the list which also includes special categories like youth, student intern, community service, and corporate volunteers. Definitions of volunteering from other countries are similar those from American organizations. Volunteering England (2010) defines volunteerism as activities completed during unpaid time that benefit others. They identify four principles that guide volunteer activities: 1) the activity chosen is by the volunteer's choice; 2) opportunities are open all individuals; 3) both the volunteer and the individual should benefit from the relationship; and 4) volunteer efforts should be recognized. Why is volunteering important? Many religions and cultures impart the importance of community service. From the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel, individuals are taught the notion of being their brother's keeper and gaining a sense of social responsibility. Hence, many religious institutions take on the responsibility of promoting and supporting community service. …" @default.
