- W3164271569 abstract "This article addresses the lessons and rules that the Torah – the Pentateuch, or Five Books of Moses - can teach us about sustainability and environmentalism, and its comparison to the Christian philosophy for treating the earth. For our purposes Sustainability “means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The book of Genesis tells us of the story of the creation; whose main protagonist, of course, is God. Moreover, the first entity that God created, as noted in the biblical book of Genesis, was the earth. Consequently, the earth forms the basis or foundation for the rest of the world’s infrastructure, i.e., the waters, fauna, and flora. But, it is in the other four Books that the Torah instructs the Jewish people to protect and sustain the earth and its creatures. So what is Jewish Perspective on Sustainability? The safety of creation, including animals and ecosystems is an essential component of the Torah’s commandments. I offer five biblical examples. They are: (1) Shiluach Ha’ken - the protection of birds (Deuteronomy 22:6-7); (2) “tza’ar ba’alei hayim,” – to not treat animals cruelly and to be aware of the suffering of animals (Exodus 23:4-5 and Deuteronomy 5:14); (3) Shmita – The requirement that we provide the earth a sabbatical year and to not grow any crops on a plot of land every seventh year (Exodus 23:11); (4) Ba’al Tashchit – “do not destroy” --one must not destroy fruit bearing trees during war, even if they belong to the enemy (Deuteronomy 20:19-20); and (5) Tikkun Olam – repairing the world (the Mishna). These commandments are the compared with the call to stop destroying all forms of life by American authors, including Aldous Huxley, Aldo Leopold, and the historian Lynn White, Jr., and their opposition to what they viewed as the Christian ethos of dominating the land." @default.
