- W3164358646 abstract "To the Editor: In light of recent calls to action for racial equality, many medical students have stepped up and used their medical platform to build awareness of police brutality as a public health issue. For students of color, this task is a welcomed opportunity to inspire meaningful change and conversation to improve the lives of marginalized communities. However, this additional role can be overwhelming, as students of color may be dealing with additional expectations and challenges not encountered by nonminority students. These additional expectations and challenges come with being exceptions within a predominantly White environment in medicine and are often referred to as the minority tax. 1 For faculty, this may manifest as pressure to lead diversity efforts and to address racism and inequities in mentorship and promotion. 2 For students, it can also include leading social activism efforts while balancing that activity with normal academic and career responsibilities. The recognition of police brutality as a public health problem is a much-needed change in academic medicine. Faculty and students across all racial and ethnic lines share the responsibility of fostering reform because it will improve the lives of their Black and Brown patients. Sharing this task is also important in removing the emotional weight disproportionately carried by students of color, who already navigate issues of microaggression. Additionally, these students’ increased involvement with activism may limit time for academic coursework or professional development. With activities such as research being prioritized by competitive subspecialties, 3 it is not surprising that the minority tax could indirectly impact resident selection and placement. Though many explanations exist to explain this problem, time spent away from research or other professional development opportunities could be a significant contributing factor. The solution to the minority tax is not simple. It first requires the conscious effort to recognize an unbalanced system. While many students of color take pride in being activists, a consolidated effort between administration, faculty, and students is necessary to prevent students of color from carrying undue burdens that can sometimes lead to burnout. In addition, further conversations about the impact of racial inequality and police brutality on health are still needed. Together, all of us in academic medicine can better carry on these difficult conversations and be advocates for the needs of our most marginalized patients." @default.
