- W3165514893 abstract "Coastal habitats worldwide face the problem of coastal erosion due to natural hazards and human-induced activities. Coastal ecosystems like coral reefs protect shorelines and help manage risk and ensure effective adaptation, among other benefits. Coral reefs reduce wave height, which impacts coastlines, by attenuating more than 85% of incoming wave energy and creating a sheltering effect that facilitates sediment accumulation and shoreline stability. Reef-building oysters also trap sediment, reduce water velocity, and control coastal erosion. Natural reefs provide risk-reduction benefits compared to conventional artificial defenses like seawalls and breakwaters. Reef restoration and enhancement in combination with artificial reefs is also a cost-effective alternative to conventional human made structures. Conservation and preservation efforts to retain existing reefs, restore damaged reefs, and create new ecosystems to replace those that have been lost are necessary for shoreline stabilization. This chapter provides evidence for better assessing the role of reefs in shoreline protection and stability, discusses the importance of reef status in coastal management and protection, identifies how the degradation of reefs will result in severe coastal erosions, and presents advanced ecosystem-based engineering as an effective alternative for climate adaptation and shoreline protection." @default.
