- W3166826534 abstract "In the search for a better understanding of how self-regulation is used in classroom teaching in the mainstream public elementary system in British Columbia, a research finds herself on an unexpected path. Teaching practices that assist students in recognizing stress, promoting skills of resiliency, and communication that considers needs and feelings are often distracted by a nagging Question: how do I get my students to do what I want them to do? This paper weaves together two case studies through a narrative academic approach that integrates the researcher’s own autoethnographic reflections on the disconnections between teaching beliefs and classroom practice. If we are preoccupied with compliance, can we see stress behaviour and support self-regulation? Is self-regulation a tool for classroom management or a mindset shift that subverts this need for control? Through a series of interviews and classroom observations, two classroom teachers demonstrate that praxis—or the connection between theory and practice through reflection and action—is essential for teaching self-regulation with progressivist values, and for an education that supports democracy." @default.
